TODAY is the last chance for people to lodge their vote in the Pyrenees Shire Council election

6,137 people are enrolled to vote across the Shire’s five wards.

1,252 people are enrolled to vote in Avoca ward, 1,293 in Beaufort ward, 1,081 in De Cameron ward, 1,110 in Ercildoune ward and 1,165 in Mount Emu ward.

Across the Shire, there are 236 absentee landlords also allowed a vote.

As of 5pm Wednesday, 3,870 or 63.06% of eligible people had voted according to the Victorian Electoral Commission.

This year’s council election is the first time in over a decade where all wards are being contested.

De Cameron ward, where Mayor Robert Vance is retiring, has the biggest contest with four women standing – Fiona Williamson, Kate Tol, Megan Phelan and Rose Lavie.

In Beaufort ward, Cr Damian Ferrari is up against local businessman Paul Callinan, in Avoca ward Cr Ron Eason is being challenged by Rebecca Wardlaw, in Ercildoune ward Cr David Clark is up against Simon Tol and in Mt Emu ward Cr Tanya Kehoe is facing a challenge from Dan Ferguson.

Voting closes this week for Victorian local council elections. Voters who have not yet voted are urged to do so before it’s too late.

Completed ballot papers must be in the mail or delivered to the election office by 6 pm TODAY Friday 25 October.

Ballots posted after this deadline cannot be counted.

Electoral Commissioner Sven Bluemmel said it was important for people to vote.

“Local councils make all kinds of decisions for their communities, so it’s important that you exercise your right to vote.

“Your vote will help decide who will be representing you at the local level for the next four years.”

Anyone who hasn’t received a voter pack will need to visit the election office next to the Shire offices in Lawrence Street Beaufort today to get a replacement on the spot.

Voting is compulsory for all voters who were enrolled for this election.

Voters who don’t vote may be fined.

The winners in this year’s election will be announced on November 15.
